To Prince Edward Island, 1965 by Alex Colville: in this complex double portrait, Colville tackles many of his familiar themes in his signature style. Firstly, this image engages with several layers of viewing: the central figure, a woman with binoculars, confronts the viewer’s gaze, while her arm partially obscures the viewer’s access to the man who sits behind her. Aside from themes of viewership, this work also demonstrates Colville’s interest in male-female relationships, in particular, what the artist describes as a contrast between “the searching vision of the female,” and the “passive” approach of the male gaze: “The woman sees, I suppose, and the man does not.
